Pregnancy is typically a time of happiness. But sometimes, parents receive an unexpected diagnosis during pregnancy. For any parent who has experienced a difficult or terminal prenatal diagnosis, they will probably tell you it was very traumatic. Many parents are unprepared for the news from their OB doctor that something is wrong with their baby. They often don’t know what to do.
Do you get a second opinion?
Is the diagnosis correct?
Do you trust that your doctor’s recommendations are good?
Genetic testing is one way that can detect prenatal conditions. However, there are high amounts of false positives and misinterpretations with these- roughly 40%! (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/search/research-news/6434/)
Sometimes, what you don’t want to believe is actually true, though. Your child does have a serious condition. Some doctors will unfortunately recommend abortions for certain conditions they believe are life-limiting. Many parents have experienced a doctor recommending an abortion for a suspected/diagnosed prenatal condition, and the parents having to stand up for their child.
Some regret not standing up for their child’s life.
Many feel alone during these times. They are unsure where to turn for help.
